How to start? Tentatively one might assume, but that's not really my style - so leaping with both feet! I think the teaching of English has changed so dramatically and continues to change at such a rapid rate that it becomes necessary to figure ways that make teaching and learning efficient, effective as well as educational! I love those moments when you actually see the results of teaching, when the glow of recognition about how meaning is made is reflected in your students' eyes. That's the stuff I want more of!
Here's a link to my prezi... many of the youtube clips are soundless (I'll fill in sound when I give my paper).
There seems to be some lovely connections at the conference between the notion of acquisition of language and empowerment. The notion of Maslow's heirarchy of needs and self-actualization are so closely linked to the idea how language makes us who we are, mean that providing students with the opportunities to acquire language is fundamental to them seeing themselves as successful learners.
I hear people discussing how good it would be to return to a time when the three Rs were the deal. Frankly I shudder (if one can frankly shudder) at that sort of retrospective notion. I am happy to charge into the second decade of the 21st century armed with an arsenal of ways to develop skills in students who are critical analysers and brilliant multi-literate.
Rather than 3Rs I propose 4Ds:
DESIGN
DELIVERY DISCOVERY DELIGHT!
Creating resources is a joy for me and I've discovered there are so many possibilities for student engagement using multimodal teaching resources.
If you'd like resources used in the presentation (i.e. books, how to do stuff, notes) or if you'd like to provide feedback (good or bad) just contact me on any of the following emails: jbain@oconnor.nsw.edu.au or julbain@gmail.com or jbain@une.edu.au
Part of my belief in effective teaching and learning is developing networks with other professionals... so feel free to contact me for discussion about teaching English.
For the stuff on visual grammar, I referred to Reading Images: Grammar of Visual Design by Gunther Kress and Theo Van Leeuwen, you can look at a couple of pages at Amazon
I will embed a video I made (which I use in my teaching) which has proven to be very successful for developing student ability to develop the language, apply the language to particular texts, show how texts can be critically analysed.
